Ontario now has about 1.4 million people aged 65 and over, according to Stats Canada. It is expected that this 65+ group wil grow rapidly in the future, both in numbers and as a portion of the population of Canada (approximately 12%-16% by the year 2016, and 23% by 2041.)
Research shows that most of the elderly prior to 1950 were already edentulous by age 65. Dentistry's advances in the practice of prevention and good oral health habits, coupled with dental insurance, have resulted in patients today having more teeth. Now 52% of residents living in institutions have their natural teeth. Accourding to Stats Canada there are 109,000 patients living in Long-Term Care Facilities iin the province of Ontario.
